Keep going … Blue Skies Ahead
What is catastrophizing?
Catastrophizing means assuming that the worst possible outcome must happen. Catastrophizing is a cognitive distorsion that may or may not be related to other health conditions.
As a cognitive distortion, catastrophizing is an irrational thought.
If you are catastrophizing, it means you falsely believe that a situation is far worse than it actually is. Typically a person who is catastrophizing is convinced either that their present situation is worse than it is, or that a catastrophe is inevitable in the future.
What causes catastrophizing?
The causes of catastrophizing are unclear and may differ from one person to the other. In some, catastrophizing may be a learned coping mechanism. In others, it may be related to brain chemistry.
Realizing that you catastrophize is the first step to helping yourself.
Consult your mental health care provider if you think you need help.
